Mental Health Resources:

  • The Trevor Project — Support for LGBTQ+ youth via phone (866‑488‑7386), text (START to 678678), or online chat—available 24/7. https://www.thetrevorproject.org/
  • Therapist Aid– Free online resource offering mental health worksheets and education materials on topics like coping skills, self esteem, trauma, and mindfulness

  • NAMI Illinois — Offers free online support groups, educational resources, and a dedicated Teen & Young Adult Helpline (“Friend” to 62640, available Mon–Fri 10 am–10 pm ET OR call 1‑800‑950‑6264) https://namiillinois.org/
  • PFLAG Chicago– Organization dedicated to supporting, advocating, and educating LGBTQ+ people. Support groups available. https://pflag.org/
  • JCC Chicago – Teen Mental Health — Offers blogs, well-being tips, podcasts, mental health apps (e.g. MindDoc, Calm, Talkspace, Teen Talk), and peer-led initiatives. Great for self-directed support.https://www.jccchicago.org/programs/communities/teens/teen-mental-health/

PEAK MENTOR EXPECTATIONS

  • ROLE & CONDUCT

    • Model strong character, life skills, and goal-setting
    • Provide exposure, guidance, and consistent support
  • TIME COMMITMENT

    • Minimum 4 hours of face time each month
    • Attend quarterly PEAK outings
    • Maintain regular communication (weekly or biweekly check-ins)
    • Be consistent and follow through on commitments
  • PROGRAM PARTICIPATION

    • Attend mentor education sessions and quarterly ConCalls
    • Stay connected with PEAK’s Program Manager
      1. attend check-in calls
    • Complete and maintain required trainings (VIRTUS, Mandated Reporter, background checks)
    • Act as an ambassador and advocate for PEAK
  • ACCOUNTABILITY

    • Communicate challenges or life changes with PEAK staff
    • Mentors who stop showing up, fail to communicate, or disengage, will be excused from the program
