Kalei is a PEAK Alum and Proud Mentor of Holy Trinity Graduate, Priska

Being a mentor to Priska Adjei through the PEAK program has been an incredibly fulfilling journey. Priska graduated in May 2024 and is now beginning her first year at the University of Illinois. She hopes to pursue a career in medicine, either as a nurse or a Physician Assistant. I couldn’t be prouder of how far she’s come.

I was inspired to become a PEAK mentor because I was looking for a meaningful change in my life. Helping youth has always been a passion of mine, and with five younger siblings, I’ve had plenty of practice as a mentor. This experience has brought new energy and joy to my life, along with many great friendships. Although I’ve only been a mentor for a little less than a year, being matched with Priska during her senior year of high school has been amazing. I’m excited to continue growing as a mentor with PEAK and to support more scholars in the future.

One of the most memorable moments of our mentorship was during Priska’s senior speech. She spoke with such emotion and love about our relationship. Hearing her express how much our time together meant to her was the moment I truly understood the impact I had made.  However, I believe mentorship isn’t about just one single moment. It’s about consistently showing up for the many small moments that build trust, understanding, and growth.

Being a PEAK mentor has also impacted my personal and professional growth. I’ve learned to be more patient and to better understand the needs of others. I’ve also gained a deeper appreciation for different cultural backgrounds that shape our experiences. Through Priska, I’ve learned about the challenges faced by immigrant families as they integrate into American society. This experience has broadened my perspective on community needs.

PEAK stands out because of its holistic approach to mentorship. The program combines academic support, personal development, and community engagement. It fosters lasting relationships that empower both mentors and scholars to grow together. To those considering becoming a PEAK mentor, I would say it’s a humbling and rewarding experience. You have the chance to make a lasting impact while also learning and growing yourself. One of my favorite memories was taking Priska ice skating. She was so nervous at first, clinging to me as we slowly made our way around the rink. But by the end, she had let go and was skating more confidently on her own. It’s moments like these that make the commitment truly worthwhile.

PEAK has helped me develop a deeper sense of community involvement. The program has shown me the incredible value of mentorship. I’m grateful for the opportunity to be a part of such an impactful organization, and I look forward to continuing this journey with future scholars.
